What ports needs to be open for fire wall settings to allow SSMS to open a connection to SQL Server without using remote desktop on the network? I have verified from SQL server settings that it does allow remote connections. However, when we use our systems to connect, we get time outs. When we Remote Desktop into the DSP server and data server, we are able to run SSMS and connect to the SQL database.

  SShah: SQL Server default port: 1433.

  You can very the port using following path:

  1. Login to (RDP) to Database Server

  2. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager

  3. Check Property of the TCP/IP

  4. Telnet
