Collect is the main tool within the DSP that extracts, or moves, data from one source of data to another. The basic process is as follows:
- A user specifies a target that will receive the data.
- A corresponding source is chosen as the origin of the data.
- Within the source, a user adds a table name with which to make the data extraction.
- A data package is built and data is uploaded into the new table in the target. This is then repeated for each table required in the target.
This process may be sufficient for a handful of tables, but what if there were hundreds of tables? Fortunately, there is a way to not only capture all tables from within a source, but also to customize the selection of which tables should actually be extracted. This process is called the 'fetch' process.
Once a source is established for a target in Collect, a user can fetch all or a specified group of tables.
- Access the vertical view of the Source.
- Select the Action tab.
- Click Fetch Tables. At this point a new group is created in the system types. It is assumed that a System Type is already set up for use in the source. Close the vertical view once finished.
- Navigate to Common > System Types.
- Find the System Type used in the source from Collect. Click Groups.
- While viewing Groups, the dependency pane shows all possible tables within that source database. Clicking the 'Active' checkbox for a table name will select only those tables relevant for extraction in the group.
- Navigate back to Collect and select the appropriate Target.
- At the Source level, click Import Group Tables. This will place all the tables selected in step 6 in the list of tables in the Source.
- Click Build and Refresh on the Source toolbar. This will build all packages and refresh all tables that were imported from the group.
